i am looking for somebody with knowledge in mapping software or GIS, i have a assignment for university which involves drawing a grid over South Africa (preferably a 16 by 16 or 20X20) nothing too detailed, and then working out bird diversity per cell, (that i do manually as he has provided the numbers) , the professor explained to us how to do this manually using colour pencils however he also told us that we should find new ways to do the assignment, i have had some experience with ArcMap GIS software but dont really know how i would go about over laying a Grid on a Map in GIS and assigning values per grid square, i know this is a long shot but if some one could explain to me or guide me to a website i might be able to learn this life skill.
Basically i want help to make something like this

but with an empty SA where i will be able to colour each square myself (based on the number of different bird species that i have ) maybe even using paint or something like that. All and any advice and help will be much appreciated
